TWO people remained in hospital this morning after a three-vehicle smash at a Valleys accident blackspot.

A man was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, with severe head injuries after the crash near Abercarn.

He was later transferred to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, where he underwent surgery to an ear last night.

His wife is still in the Royal Gwent and last night underwent surgery on an arm. The accident happened at around 2.30pm yesterday near Chapel of Ease on the A467 directly beneath Maple Terrace.

Traffic was diverted through Abercarn and the A467 was closed for nearly five hours as accident investigators gathered evidence.

A Golf Gti, Toyota people-carrier and a Vauxhall Astra were involved in the accident. Local people say the crash is further proof that more signs are needed in the area to warn motorists.

June Wilkinson, who lives in Commercial Road, Abercarn, said: "A little girl was knocked down near here a few weeks ago and I know of at least three deaths in recent years. "Drivers don't know when they come round this bend about its dangers. "We should have warning signs."

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: "Three cars were involved but fire crews did not have to cut anyone free.

"There were walking wounded at the scene when we arrived, who were then taken to hospital."
