NEWPORT Saracens continued their fine form with a 55-7 thumping of Old Penarthians. The Saracens started off strong with three tries in the first quarter, two going to scrum-half Gareth Barrett and the other to centre Peter Evans. Darren Gregg converted two.
Strong work by the forwards saw them secure possession and found Leon Pemberton making the break, the ball was passed out and Jamie Harrison emerged from under the bodies to claim the try. Gregg again converted.
The Saracens began the second half in impressive form, with quick hands and solid play they secured the ball and found No 8 Leighton Steer crossing the line in the corner. A quick break by Saracens from the scrum, saw Barrett pass to Pemberton who side stepped the defence and crossed the line. Gregg made it seven kicks converted.
Old Penarthians scrum half took a quick penalty that found Dave Bennett claiming the try and Nigel Edmunds converting it, to give them their only points of the game.
But the Saracens had not finished scoring yet and added a further three tries to their tally. The first saw them run the ball out of their own half, with the pick up and drive and quick hands the ball found winger Jason Green poised to add five points.
Leighton Steer got his brace following impressive play by Gareth Barrett and the conversion was kicked.
The Saracens final try saw them break from their own five metre line and force the play on Old Penarthians try line for Matthew Becks to claim the final points in an impressive game by the whole pack.
Newport Saracens Seconds - Tries: Peter Hoole and Lee Butcher plus five points from the boot of Charlie Griffith saw the seconds win a hard fought encounter at Abersychan 15-3.
Newport Saracens Youth - Chris Bridges kicked a penalty early on in the game. Croesyceiliog were strong up front and scored a try early in the second half which they converted to take the lead. Replacement fullback Aled Owen scored a fine try which was converted by Chris Bridges. In the dying minutes of the game Croesyceiliog were awarded a penalty for offside which they opted to run and cost them dearly.
