NEWPORT docks should be given a more prominent role in the regeneration of Newport as a city following an impressive appraisal of its future.
This is the view of Mike German, (pictured) Welsh Liberal Democrats leader in the National Assembly, who has called on Newport council to encourage growth of businesses on docks land.
Mr German said the council should do this as part of its corporate plan.
Representatives of Associated British Ports, which owns Newport docks, appeared before the Assembly's economic development committee, where Mr German was impressed by their upbeat appraisal of the port's future.
"Newport port has an enormous amount of spare capacity land on their premises," he said. "Business is on the up, but they said they have not put a great deal of investment in to it."
Mr German is encouraging the council to give the docks a more prominent role in its forthcoming corporate plan.
"The council is in danger of turning its back on the history of Newport," he said.
"It's the most eastern port in Wales and they have good land available for development and it is not far from the M4 for anyone wanting to move shipments further on. It's a major economic opportunity for Newport and it would be a mistake to ignore it."
A spokeswoman for the council said the port had not been neglected in the plan.
"The council recognises the crucial role of the ports in terms f Newport's future growth as a strategic location for enterprise and economic development and investment."
