GWENT's new High Sheriff was sworn in at the civic centre, Newport.
William Nevill Waters, holder of the MBE and also a magistrate, is the latest to take up the historic role.
The post of High Sheriff dates back to Saxon times when a reeve - the title was later changed to sheriff - was in charge of an estate.
