WELL-KNOWN Newport businessman Harry Wheeler (pictured) has died at the age of 79.
He was the former managing director of the family fruit and vegetable firm, which has wholesale premises in Kingsway and two shops.
The business was established by his father, also called Harry, just after the First World War and he began working there in 1915.
Mr Wheeler spent all his working life in the business, apart from during the Second World War, when he served in the forces.
"He retired when he was about 65 but he always took an active part in the background," said his brother Graham, who also joined the family firm.
After retirement, Mr Wheeler became chairman and his brother took over as managing director.
Graham Wheeler's son And-rew now runs the business, carrying on the long family tradition.
"The business will be carrying on just the same as he would have wanted it," said Mr Graham Wheeler, adding that the firm had been his brother's life.
Mr Wheeler was involved with St Bride's Church in Magor, where he had married. His wife Kathleen died several years ago.
"He was well-liked and very generous to different people," said Graham Wheeler. Mr Wheeler, who lived in Malpas, died in the Royal Gwent Hospital after a long illness.
He leaves two children, Janet and John, three grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
His funeral service is being held on Monday at 12 noon in St Mary's Church, Malpas. The family have requested that donations in lieu of flowers may be given to Diabetic UK.
