A PERMANENT tribute to a popular head teacher who died during a cricket match has been unveiled.

Graham Baldwin, 54, head teacher at Woodlands Junior School, Cwmbran, collapsed and died on May 5 last year.

The father-of-one from Goytre, who had been head at the school since 1992, was playing for Monkswood cricket club against Tredegar Southend when he left the pitch feeling unwell and was found on the floor of the dressing room.

Following his death the school, governors, LEA and wider community united in grief. The school triumphed over adversity with an excellent inspection report.

But to show Mr Baldwin is not forgotten, a large mosaic which every pupil at the school has helped create was unveiled at County Hall, Cwmbran this week.

The colourful patterned creation measuring two metres by one metre includes self portraits of pupils at the school.

The tribute follows the memorial garden created at the school in the headmaster's name. The mural was commissioned by the National Association of Head Teachers and saw the pupils working with local artists.

Roger Stevenson, who is now head teacher of the school, said: "The whole school has been involved with either designing the mural or putting it together...the children will know there is something in the education department that represents them. "It is in the memory of Mr Baldwin and is something to be proud of."
