GLAMORGAN today officially unveiled former Australian Test fast bowler Mike Kasprowicz as their overseas player for next season, skipper Steve James giving the 30-year-old Queenslander a ringing endorsement.

"I think he's a top signing," said James. "With Steve Watkin retiring at the end of last season seam bowling was a department we needed to strengthen and Mike is an ideal recruit.

"He can be a big presence in both the championship and one-day competitions. "Not only is he reliable, but he is a proven Test player and I think he will fit in well." Kasprowicz, who replaces fellow Queenslander Jimmy Maher on a one-year contract, said: "Having heard such great reports from Jimmy, I thought that's a place I've got to go to."

The 17-times capped player, who had average seasons in county cricket with Essex and Leicestershire, added: "Jimmy told me the people at Glamorgan are a wonderful bunch and I had no doubts about signing for them.

"I've played at Cardiff a couple of times and at Neath with Young Australia (in 1995) and I've played against Robert Croft, Matthew Maynard and Steve James.

"Glamorgan have a pretty strong side with a nucleus of experienced players plus some talented young guys and I hope we can enjoy some success. It's going to be fun." Kasprowicz, who will join up with his new team-mates after their pre-season South Africa tour, is currently fourth in Australian domestic cricket's bowling averages.

He is no mug with the bat and is known as a hard worker. He still has hopes of playing for his country again, but it must be debatable if he can take the number of wickets Watkin managed at his best.
