KIMBERLY Unsworth is hoping to cycle away with Most Promising Young Sportswoman of the Year at the 2001 Newport Sports Awards.
The 15-year-old from Henllys, near Cwmbran, is a highly-promising member of the Newport Phoenix Cycling Club and holds a number of trophies including Welsh Road Circuit Champion, Welsh youth 10-mile time-trial champion and Welsh Schools Circuit Champion.
Also in the category, at the Newport Borough Council and Sports-Council sponsored awards at the Newport Centre tomorrow, are swimmer Laura-Jane Bruce, hockey player Alice Mundy, Newport Harriers athlete Noeleen Morris and up-and-coming tennis star Alicia Goulding.
Chepstow-based Bruce, 13, is a member of Newport and Maindee Olympic Swimming Club and she won five golds at the Welsh Winter Championships, including the 400m and 200m free-style and the 100m and 200m butterfly.
Mundy, 15, of Magor, is a regular in Newport Ladies Hockey Club starting XI and she has represented Wales, South Wales and South-East Wales Schools all at under-16 level. Newport's Morris, 10, broke the South-East Wales long jump record, ran the 800m in 2.51 minutes and has represented Wales in cross country.
Goulding, 11, is the number-one tennis player in Great Britain for her age and is the first child in Wales to be accepted on the Lawn Tennis Association futures programme. In the Newport's Most Promising Young Sportsman of the Year, Ryan Campbell will face one of the toughest battles of his short career.
The 15-year-old was second in the UK Open, first in the Welsh Open and Welsh Closed and has also taken gold medal in the World forms and freestyle Association sparring category.
Boxer Kyron Bromley, squash player Robert Sutherland and speedway cyclist Nicky Evans will push him all the way for the accolade.
Alway Amateur Boxing Club product Bromley, 13, won the 2001 WABA Welsh schoolboy 36 kilo champion and has been called up to the full Welsh national squad.
Newport Squash Racquets Club player Sutherland, 16, is Welsh number two at under-17 level and is a member of the Welsh Elite squad. He won the bronze medal in the European Junior Championships and participates in the Welsh Premier League.
Evans, 14, captain of Newport Cycle Speedway club, won both the British Under-14s Grand-Prix and South-West series. Evans is British Champion after amassing more individual points than any other rider in any other competition.
