ACE Newbridge marksman Jason Williams topped 300 points for the season as the Welfare Ground side romped through the mud for eight tries against Llanharan last night and 50-10 victory . Williams converted five of the touchdowns to reach 301 points in league and cup matches this term. It was Newbridge's fifth consecutive league win and keeps them well in touch with First Division leaders Aberavon and Pontypool.
Backs coach Jonathan Westwood said: "This was a very good win. The pitch was heavy and to score 50 points in conditions like that is pleasing. The main thing for us now is to keep our feet on the ground, keep trying to churn out the wins and keep putting the pressure on the top two.
"I think we are realising our potential as a squad but I still feel we can improve a great deal. What is very good is that the boys are playing for each other; in these days of uncertainty in Welsh rugby, that is the most important thing."
Newbridge's excellent forwards, ably led by captain and number eight Geraint Gladwyn, took a firm grip on the game. Llanharan continually found themselves on the back foot in the scrums while big lock Anthony Edwards was a tower of strength at the lineout.
Impressive prop Matthew Price and centre Gareth Turner led the try charge swith two apiece, the other touchdowns coming from centre Shane Webley, wings Paul Collett and Jonathan Williams and full back Huw Lock.
Llanharan, although occupying a safe mid-table spot, hardly threatened to unsettle their opponents in a one-sided contest. Wing Richard Radford crossed for a 69th- minute consolation try, converted by still accomplished full back Chris John who also kicked a first half penalty goal.
