NEWPORT coach Ian McIntosh has sung the praises of two New Zealanders -- Shane Howarth and Steve Hansen -- for vastly different reasons, writes Robin Davey.
He rates Howarth as one of the best members of the team, well worth his salary, and he believes Hansen is on the right track over the releasing of players.
McIntosh has named current Welsh team members Andy Marinos, Ian Gough and Chris Anthony in the 22, Marinos and Gough in the side, for tomorrow night's derby league clash at Ebbw Vale.
McIntosh praises the co-operation of Hansen in the selection of the Welsh trio, the caretaker coach releasing them from a Wales session this week to train with their club. "Steve said to the players to go back to the clubs and play. That's fantastic and it's fortunate the three guys we've got relish coming back and playing which sets an example to others," said McIntosh.
"His attitude is right and if we keep the dialogue like that it serves both purposes. The top players playing is essential to club rugby."
McIntosh attacked the media men who have criticised the salary outside half Howarth is supposed to earn at Newport.
"I don't care if he's 34 or 44, he's one of the best professionals in the team and one of the most valuable members. He's worth every cent he earns," said McIntosh.
He also revealed negotiations with Newport's out-of-contract players are nearing a successful conclusion.
"The nucelus of this team will play for Newport next year."
