TO celebrate all that is good about young people, the Argus has launched a Young and Positive campaign - and we want you to nominate worthy youngsters. TELOR IWAN meets a Newport girl whose work in her community has led to a nomination.
THE future's brighter thanks to youngsters like Stacey Griffiths. That's the verdict of youth worker Carol Gell who contacted the Argus to nominate the Duffryn teenager for our Young and Positive award - which carries a £500 prize courtesy of sponsors Consignia.
She said: "Thanks to Stacey, future generations in Duffryn will be much better off. She's a leading light in the community and it's important that we hear about the likes of her and not the minority who cause a nuisance."
Carol Gell, who has known 16-year-old Stacey since she started working at Duffryn youth club seven years ago, added: "Stacey is the youth representative on the Duff-ryn Youth Forum and is a leading member of the DYF Crew, which meets with adults and suggests how we can improve facilities for the young in Duffryn.
"Stacey is at the forefront of organising a youth caf, It won't be open for years yet but she wants to do it for the next generation - it is such a positive and refreshing attitude." Duffryn High School pupil Stacey says her willingness to help comes naturally: "It's just a way of trying to improve Duffryn.
"I am not the only one but I was nominated for the forum to create things that will occupy future generations, because there is not a lot about for us at the moment."
Stacey adds that hopefully she and her friends will be able to help change the public perception of Duffryn.
She said: "There are so many good things that go on here that are not reported. People are friendly and we are trying to improve the estate."
