NEWBRIDGE have a simple target for the remainder of a highly successful Welsh First Division campaign - to win as many games as they can, writes Paul Tully.
"We've got to win every game possible to finish as high up the table as we possibly can," said club director of rugby Keith Westwood.
"Pontypool and Aberavon are not home and dry. We are only six points behind them. "And with politics as they are in Wales, we need to finish as high as we can because you never know what's likely to happen next season."
Newbridge's toughest tasks will be their visits to Tondu, Blackwood and Bedwas, all of whom they have beaten comfortably at home.
Tomorrow it's relegation-threatened Dunvant at the Welfare Ground (2:30pm) with Westwood warning against complacency.
"We've got to view all the teams in the same light," he said. "It's proven in this division that the bottom team is capable of beating the top. We have told the players this week what we expect during the remainder of the season and they have to step up a gear. "We have shown recently that we can play good rugby."
But particularly pleasing has been their solid, well-disciplined defence which has resulted in them conceding the fewest points in the division apart from Carmarthen, who have played two games fewer.
Meanwhile, Newbridge hope by the end of the month to have signed all or most of this season's squad for next season and are on the lookout for a few new faces. "It's difficult because we don't know what funding we are going to get from the Welsh Rugby Union next season, but we can't stand still," said Westwood. "If any players do go I hope it's in order to move up into the Premier Division. There are a few I believe capable of that."
Flanker John Bowd plays in the centre tomorrow as Gareth Turner is injured and Shane Webley, Martin Ridley and Paul Collett are unavailable.
