RESIDENTS' fears over the international velodrome plan-ned for Newport were partly allayed this week.

There are still concerns that the new development at the Spytty sports complex could increase risks of flooding in the area.

People living near the site, who described the proposed 20-metre high building as a "monstrosity", attended a Lliswerry neighbourhood meeting to hear a presentation by council officers.

Residents were worried the plans for the velodrome indicated that concerts for up to 4,500 people could be held there.

"There are not going to be concerts there," said one relieved resident, who did not wish to be named. "We are pleased about that obviously."

They were also unhappy that two football pitches were being lost because of the new development.

But, said the local man, they were told it would include other activities including five-a-side football and badminton.

He added: "We will be continuing to raise our concerns but I don't think we can stop it going there. We are not, in essence against it, but we do have particular concerns about drainage."

Newport council are currently carrying out consultations with residents as part of the planning process for the £7 million velodrome which is being fully funded by a lottery grant.

"We want to create a facility which is for elite athletes but the local community will also enjoy," said a spokeswoman.
