DESPITE fears of a Jubilee flop, much of Gwent is gearing up to celebrate the event this summer.
There have been claims the royal landmark is being met with apathy but we can reveal that plenty of partying will be going on in Gwent.
Research by the Argus shows that so far, 21 street parties are being planned throughout the region.
The Golden Jubilee weekend begins on Friday, June 1 and the celebrations will carry on until June 4, through two bank holidays. Gwent will even be getting a royal visit, with the Queen visiting Newport as part of her Golden Jubilee tour of Wales.
And with Newport due to find out within the next few weeks whether the Jubilee city bid has been successful, the stage is set for a summer to remember.
Plans for celebrations are being made all over Gwent, with events set to include street parties, discos, barbecues, pantomimes and fancy dress contests.
Among plans are: Street parties in Newport including Maindee, Stow Hill and Ringland A four-day Jubilee party in Rogiet A street party and disco in Llanhilleth.
Alan McCarthy is the chairman of the Aberthaw Circle Jubilee committee, which is organising a street party in Aberthaw Close, Newport.
Their plans for a day to mark the historic occasion include sports for children in the morning and a fancy-dress contest and talent show in the afternoon - and adults must dress as their parents did at the Coronation, with a 1950s theme running throughout the day.
