POLICE want to trace a vehicle which sped away from the car park of a factory in Blaen-avon minutes before it went up in flames.
A fire gutted half of the Ark International dressing gown factory, formerly known as Andrew Russell, on Forge-side Road, at 11.20pm on Saturday.
Detectives investigating the blaze say it caused thousands of pounds worth of damage. They are keeping an open mind as to the cause of the fire. But assistant divisional officer of South Wales Fire Service, Jeffrey Mears, told the Argus that there was strong evidence to suggest arson, and the matter was now in the hands of the police.
Detective Sergeant Jim Walker, from Pontypool CID, said: "We would like to make an appeal for anyone with information to come forward with regards to reports of a dark coloured Jeep or 4x4 off-road vehicle which was seen speeding away from the car park of the factory about ten minutes before the fire broke out.
"Scenes-of-crime officers have gathered information and we are still keeping an open mind as to how the fire started until we are absolutely certain of the cause. "In this type of factory there are dust particles from the clothing which are prone to ignition."
Managing director Gary O'Loughlin is now trying to find alternative premises for his factory because health and safety rules will not allow work to go on there for some time. Mr O'Loughlin moved into the factory, which has been aided by grants, in 1998.
Nobody was injured in the blaze, which took five crews from stations in Ebbw Vale, New Inn, Blaenavon and Abersychan four hours to control.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Pontypool CID on 01495 764711.
