TOWN Balti at 99, Commercial Street, Newport, is hard to beat for value. We had a filling meal for two, with a drink each, and had change out of £20 - even with a tip!
On entering the restaurant we were quickly greeted by someone who showed us to a table and gave us a menu.
We were amazed to find that, for just £6.95 a head, we could have a starter and a main course with a side dish.
This is cheaper that some takeaways we have had. The restaurant appeared clean and was well-lit, which is always a relief to those who like to see what they are eating.
We started off with onion bhajis and meat samosas. The two bhaji were just as I like them, crispy on the outside, squidgy on the inside, with a lovely flavour.
The samosas were well cooked, with a light batter, but my dining partner would have preferred the filling a little spicier.
For the main course I chose a Chicken Biriani. The well-cooked rice contained chunks of chicken and was accompanied by a vegetable curry with chunks of vegetables.
I also had a peshwari naan. My partner opted for the ever-popular Chicken Tikka Masala, with chips and a light, fluffy plain naan.
It was a satisfying meal in more ways than one, as our total bill, which included a pint of beer and half a lager, came to £16.70. Jane Helmich
