RESIDENTS of a Newport sheltered housing scheme who had their video and hi-fi stolen just before Christmas were overwhelmed with offers of new equipment.

Malcolm Goddard, the local Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator, who appealed in the Argus for donations, said: "The Christmas spirit is obviously still there."

The equipment was stolen from the communal lounge at Tredegar Court, in Marion Street, Pill, last weekend and residents were anticipating a very quiet Christmas But immediately after the appeal was published, a video was donated by the River View Club, in Dock Street, and The Royal Mail Social Club contributed a hi-fi.

Mr Goddard, whose wife Derelyn is the scheme manager, said he had to turn down many more generous offers and wanted to thank Welcome Travel, of New Inn, for donating a case of wine once they heard residents no longer needed a video.

He also wanted to thank William Harris, of Cwrt-yr-Ysgol, Risca, and many other callers who had kindly offered videos.

Mr Goddard said: "When we arrived here there was very little social life, but the communal room has really been buzzing since they had the original video and hi-fi." The video was bought with funds raised by residents through raffles and other events, while the hi-fi was donated by the family of a former resident. He added: "The room is used seven days a week now for 12 hours a day minimum.

"One of them will bring a CD or video in and they will stay and enjoy it together."
