WITH Christmas coming their was a feast of goals in the Gwent Central League. Treble champions Govilon showed little festive spirit as they hammered Race United 17-0 - and Usk Town reminded everyone of their championship credentials with a 15-0 home win over Little Mill United.
Owens Corning B moved back to the top of Division Two with a 12-0 home win over Pontypool Town B.
Sebastopol suffered their second consecutive defeat in a row, going down 4-2 at home to Gilwern and District.
Owens Corning travelled up the road to Fairfield United looking for maximum points - and they did winning 5-1, thanks to goals from Timothy Walbyoff, Michael Murton, super-sub Matthew Robinson (2) and Mark Wyatt. Steve Smith replied for Fairfield, who remain tenth.
Govilon beat Race United at home 17-0, with goals from Leon Gilchrist (4), Sam Schwank (3), Jamie Gilchrist (3), Robert Burns (2), Richard McCarthy (2), Wyn Evans, Jamie Wilkins and Stephen Wilkins. Govilon stay in second position, two points below Owens Corning - and the top two meet on December 29.
Sebastopol went down 4-2 at home to Gilwern and District. Gilwern's goals came from Allan Burkitt, Jason Mason, Graham Rees and Matthew Williams while Mike Gallivan and Aaron Meade scored for Sebastopol.
Last season's runners-up Usk Town are in third position thanks to a 15-0 drubbing of Little Mill with goals coming from Michael Dixon (6), Daniel Bevan (5), Lee Watkins (2), Martyn Latham and Stephen Jones.
Panteg and seventh-place Pontypool Town drew 1-1. Eleventh-place Panteg's scorer was Gareth Jeffries while Pontypool's goal came from Andrew Pollard.
Goytre thrashed New Inn 6-0, thanks to goals from Marc Weaving (3), Gavin Powell (2) and Ellis Morgan.
Mardy beat Tranch United 5-1, thanks to goals from Andrew Ewers (2), Stewart Smith, Craig Lancaster and Jonathan Davies while James Proudman scored for Tranch. Mardy hold sixth position, Tranch are in ninth.
Owens Corning B take over top position of Division Two following their 12-0 home win over Pontypool B, thanks to goals from, Andrew Phillips (3) Paul Coombes (3), Ian Jarvis (2), Andrew Kent, Darren Wallace, Nicky Tudball and Paul Taylor.
Lower New Inn kept up their winning ways with a 1-0 home win over Blaenavon Blues. The goal was scored in the 75th minute by Huw Morgan. Keeper Alan Samson was man of the match for Lower New Inn while man of the match for Blaenavon Blues was Marcus Williams.
Lower New Inn move up to fifth place, Blaenavon Blues hold eighth position. A goal in the last minute from Llanarth's David Talbot rescued a point after Prescoed's Paul Hancocks had given his side the lead. The draw drops Llanarth from top position down to second position. Prescoed stay in third position.
A local derby match took place with Gilwern B at home to Clydach Wasps. The match was evenly contested. Clydach Wasps led at half-time 3-2. Gilwern B levelled the scores to 3-3 with a goal scored in the second half. The goal scorers for Gilwern B were Andy Taylor (2) and Robby Warner. Goal scorers for Clydach Wasps were Ian Morris, Ed Thompson and Chris Perry. Gilwern B hold 11th position. Clydach Wasps are in sixth position.
The league takes a partial break next Saturday with a reduced fixture list. A full programme of matches returns on Saturday, December 29, kick-offs 2.15pm.
