ONE of the leading lights in the Argus campaign for justice for miners has died.
Robert James, of Ynysddu, pictured, sparked our campaign to speed up compensation for sick miners in August 1999.
He had to wait almost another two years before getting his full and final payment - and died on Saturday in hospital, aged 74, just five months after winning damages for his lung diseases.
His story stimulated other miners, and widows, to come forward.
His daughter Linda Henry said yesterday she was sad he did not have the chance to enjoy the money, but added: "He was involved in the campaign for all the miners in the same position as he was. It kept him going and gave him something to live for again."
Mrs Henry was planning to take her father on a cruise to Malta, if he was well enough, after the money came through on June 29.
Mr James did have one holiday - in Porthcawl - but returned home after three days because he was so ill.
Islwyn MP Don Touhig, who took up Mr James' case, said: "I think he was a lesson in determination to everybody who is supporting getting justice for miners and widows, that by persistence you will win the day."
His funeral was due to take place at St Theodore's Church, Ynysddu, this morning.
