ON the main road through Rogerstone is a delightful place for the weary traveller in need of sustenance.

The winner of several Argus Restaurant of the Year Awards, the Tredegar Arms is a cracking little pub for regulars and first-timers alike.

With the locals relaxing over their pints creating a friendly atmosphere, it was the perfect place to stop off after a hard day's walking in the Breacon Beacons - a warm cosy pub with plenty of hearty food to keep out the winter cold.

For starters, we shared a bowl of delicious French onion soup complete with a large cheese-covered crouton - a lovely winter warmer.

For the main course, my walking companion warmed herself with a lasagne, while I went for the spicy chilli con carne, both were served in large portions.

For dessert, room was found to share a bowl of bread and butter pudding with thick custard - nothing like the stuff you had at school (not a lump in sight).

At £14 for food only, the bill rose to well over twenty pounds after a couple of rounds of drinks - excellent value for money.

A word of warning is that cards are not accepted, but cheques or good old fashion sterling will do. Ryland James
