GWENT people dug deep into their pockets and organised a variety of fun events for the BBC Children in Need appeal - and the totals raised were still being counted this morning .

The many events throughout Gwent included a line of pennies created by Crownbridge Special School at Sebastopol, Torfaen.

In stark contrast, a belly dancer entertained site workers on a housing estate at Langstone in Newport.

A similar exotic theme was taken up by staff at an Abergavenny building society. who dressed up ancient Egyptians.

Meanwhile, in Chepstow a local councillor underwent the traditional immersion in a bath of beans.

Several events were still taking place at the weekend, after Friday's nationwide extravaganza.

In London on Friday, Big Brother winner and Cwmbran hairdresser Helen Adams joined other celebrities from the TV virtual reality show.

Another Welshman who wowed audiences on TV was newsman Jeremy Bowen who joined other newsreaders to perform a version of a Fatboy Slim video.

Paying tribute to fundraisers in Gwent and the rest of Wales, BBC Wales controller Menna Richards said: "It was the most ambitious Children in Need day in Wales to date and it's been a fantastic success.

"We've celebrated with a spectacular free concert, the fundraising total is fantastic and our thanks go out to everyone who has supported the BBC charity."
