ABERGAVENNY outdid even England's 134-0 record international victory over Romania on Saturday when they finished just one short of 150 points with a 149-3 away victory over struggling Garndiffaith in Welsh League Division Three East.
Amazingly, a Gareth Rowlands penalty gave Garndiffaith the lead before the visitors ran in a staggering 23 tries for the highest score in their 126-year history.
Scrum half Leighton Johnston scored five, wing Matthew Alloway four and No 8 Ben Atkins 3, but even Abergavenny couldn't remember all the scorers, though coach Terry Richards said replacement flanker Stuart Shellard scored two and John Morris and Paul Cornock one apiece.
Long-standing goal-kicker and full back Carl Walbyoff scored two tries and 17 conversions for 44 points to equal new fly half Charlie Hodgson's record for England. "We could not keep up," said Richards. "We know Garndiffaith are going through a bad patch, but it was only five years ago they beat Bridgend in the cup and reached the quarter-finals.
"Our pack is building up to be a force, but it's sad for Welsh rugby when results like this happen. We were stunned.
"We've had good beatings at Garn in the past and they must not give up. If they do, it might take them 20 years to get back to where they are now."
Garndiffaith treasurer Robert Gould said: "We lost nearly all our squad from last year to better offers which can happen to any club when you are successful.
"Although many of the players are demoralised, we will fight on. "We have a youth policy and we have to hang on this season until that comes through. "But we are short on numbers, both players and on the committee, and we would welcome help from anyone."
The victory leaves Abergavenny fourth in their table with Garndiffaith, beaten by 80+ points by Tonyrefail the previous week, still seeking their first win.
* In the same division Croesyceiliog grabbed only their second win of the season, beating Tonyrefail 40-22 through tries by No 8 Craig Saunders (3), Julian Seabourne and Richie Williams and three penalties and three conversions by Matthew Entwhistle.
