SELF/PORTRAIT is a display of modern and contemporary art currently showing at the National Museum and Gallery in Cardiff.

The exhibition, exploring the representation of the self and personal identity, is the first in a series of innovative shows by the gallery, which is looking at fresh ways to stage exhibitions, following a recent public consultation exercise.

In Self/Portrait, there are 18 diverse works, in a variety of media, using conventional and unusual materials from oil and canvass to skin and grass, and include modern masters Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, as well as contemporary artists such as Donald Rodney and Julie Roberts.

The display explores identity through the shared themes of childhood, adolescence, family, relationships, nationality, illness and death.

Unsettling and intense portraits by Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and Shani Rhys-James convey the psychological and emotional drama of the artists' relationships with themselves and others, while other artists choose to represent themselves non-figuratively.

Self/Portrait will be at the National Museum and Gallery until October 2002. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm. It is closed on Mondays.
