Twyn-y-Ffrwd, Abersychan

WHAT you need to lift the spirits after a long and tiring day, on a wet Welsh autumn night, are a few pints and some good food in a warm cosy pub.

Unassuming and tucked away, the Twyn-yn-Ffrwd Inn has a good range of dishes on the menu, including plenty of fish.

Once the first few drinks had been downed, breaded lobster tails with ginger and garlic prawns were a tasty and light start to the meal. For the main course there was plenty on offer for all tastes, but those of a strong constitution were well looked-after.

Britain's favourite dish - curry- featured and there was a good choice of meats, all from the Principality.

Among the meals on offer were Tan-y-draig or Dragon's Fire Chicken Curry- for those with asbestos palates.

One of us chose Welsh lamb and leek curry, a suitably rich affair served with rice and a naan bread.

The other chose the butterfly chicken breast with lemon sauce.

It was tender and delicious, and both meals were filling and plentiful.

While the dessert selection was missed due to our lack of time, there were some good choices on the menu, in addition to a large selection of ice creams - treats for those who cannot say no to their sweet tooth.

The bill came to £26.50 for a two-course meal for two, including three rounds of drinks.

It's the perfect place to stop for a good meal on the way home from a busy day.
