WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (pictured) says he doesn't want a re-match with WBF champion Robin Reid because he's "second rate."

The 29-year-old from Newbridge told the Argus he beat Reid "with one hand" when he retained his WBO belt for the third time in February last year and going back for a re-match would only give the Runcorn boxer a "big pay-day."

Calzaghe beat Reid on points - despite injuring his hand in the bout. Fresh from being voted British Boxer of the Year by the Boxing Board Of Control, Calzaghe said: "Robin Reid is getting on the BBC but he's only a £20,000 fighter.

"I'm a top-pay boxer. And when I fought him in 1999 I beat him with one hand." He added: "He talks a good fight but he is all mouth, he's just second rate."

Calzaghe and his manager Frank Warren are now turning their attention towards the United States - and it has been suggested that he could make his eagerly-awaited American debut as early as January.

He retained his WBO super-middleweight crown for the ninth time last week against American Will McIntyre inside four rounds in Copenhagen.

That fight was beamed across the States through US cable station Showtime and Warren is confident that he can persuade them to screen a showdown with either David Reid or Eric Lucas in the New Year.

"I'm looking to fight a Reid," said Calzaghe. "But David Reid not Robin, or maybe Eric Lucas. "It does my head in that Robin Reid keeps on about fighting me but, I suppose, I should be glad that everyone wants to fight me."

A victory over Lucas or Reid coupled with another impressive display on pay-per-view TV could open the door to a superfight with Roy Jones Jnr.
