ROMAN soldiers will be in the historic town of Caerwent this month. The soldiers and a number of Celts will be taking part in Roman weekend on October 13 and 14.
The soldiers are expected to arrive at the excavated remains of the town and patrol the town walls from 1pm on the Saturday. They will also set up a Roman kitchen and bring along their armourer, who will be working in his forge, and their doctor.
John Nettleship, secretary of the Caerwent Historic Trust, said a story teller will also be on hand and there would be Roman games for children to take part in.
Mr Nettleship said on the Sunday a country walk had been arranged for 10.45am to the Llanmelin Hill fort which used to be occupied by local inhabitants of the area before the Romans invaded Britain.
At 2.30 in the afternoon there will also be a tour of the excavations in the town. Visitors will also be able to take part in another walk at 3pm to the megalithic alignment stones near by.
Mr Nettleship said the stones are set a short distance apart from each other and on the midwinter sunrise (December 21) a person aligning them by eye would be able to see the sunrise out of a dip in the land on the horizon.
