NEWPORT back row forward forward Andrew Powell (pictured) has been called into a Wales training squad -- after only six games in senior rugby (writes Robin Davey). Powell is only 20 and still qualifies for the Newport under-21 team, so his call-up comes right out of the blue.

He has been invited to train with a shadow national squad alongside the full squad preparing for next week's Six Nations game against Ireland.

"This has all come at once," admitted a surprised Powell, who comes from Brecon, but went to the rival Llandovery College.

He refuses to be overawed by his sudden elevation. "I can handle the pressure and the way it's going. I'll take every step as it comes and if it does come I'll have to make the most of it," he said.

"I'm ready to fulfil my aim which is to play at the very top. If I do that it will be a big bonus." With Newport pair Alix Popham and Joe Powell injured earlier in the season, young Powell quickly seized his opportunity with both hands.

The rangy youngster made his debut against Edinburgh, excelled against the might of Munster and is now an ever-present in the team, very fit, quick and aggressive. Wales coach Graham Henry and team manager Alan Phillips watched him at Neath and were impressed. Now they have called him in.
