STAFF working at a kebab shop which closed voluntarily during Newport's typhoid outbreak say they have been attacked by stone-throwers.

Sam's Kebab House in Commercial Road, Pill, closed voluntarily in August as health experts investigated Newport's typhoid outbreak, which left five young people hospitalised.

Tests for the disease carried out at the shop were negative and it reopened. Owner Sam Bulut (pictured) said: "Young kids are throwing eggs at the windows and stones at staff late at night, shouting 'Typhoid!'

"We haven't had any staff who've been hit and there hasn't been any damage yet. "But business is quite bad and my tenant is finding it hard to pay the rent. "When I ran the shop, I was making £800 a week, but now we're only having between 10 and 15 customers a day.

"What are the council going to do about it? I've lost business, I could lose my house if I can't make the mortgage repayments. If the bank step in, I've lost everything." Inspector Steve Taylor, of Newport police, said reports of three incidents close to the premises were under investigation. He urged staff who felt they were being targeted to contact police.
