DESPITE becoming wooden spoonists, Newport Hayley Wasps aim to end their British Premier League season on a high against Trelawny Tigers on Sunday.
The St Austell-based outfit's 50-40 home victory over Swindon Robins on Tuesday condemned Wasps to bottom place.
However a win, by more than a four-point margin, will not only give the Wasps a fifth victory of the season, it will also clinch their first bonus point.
Trelawny will start four points ahead as a result of their 47-43 home success over the Wasps on August 28.
But the Wasps will start as firm favourites on Sunday and will be aiming to emulate their 52-38 home Premier Trophy win over Trelawny at the beginning of April.
Trelawny have a cosmopolitan-looking line-up and include a couple of Czech Republic riders, Pavel Ondrasik and Richard Wolff, plus Aussie ace Brett Woodifield.
"It would be great if we could finish our league campaign on a high and that's what we will be looking to achieve," said Newport promoter Tim Stone.
He has again booked the services of Boston Barracuda-Braves' talented teenager Carl Wilkinson as guest for Ryan Tolley while Trelawny will use the rider facility for the indisposed Chris Harris.
The match marks the home return of Swedish star Anders Henriksson, who has missed the last two Hayley Stadium meetings with the injury he picked up while riding in his homeland.
Newport Hayley Wasps: 1 - Anders Henriksson; 2 - Scott Smith; 3 - Glenn Cunningham; 4 - Chris Neath; 5 - Steve Masters (c); 6 - Rob Finlow; 7 - Carl Wilkinson (guest for Ryan Tolley).
Trelawny Tigers: 1 - Pavel Ondrasik; 2 - Brett Woodifield; 3 - Richard Wolff; 4 - Mark Courtney; 5 - Rider replacement for Chris Harris; 6 - Graeme Gordon (c); 7 - Simon Phillips. Start 2.30pm.
* Although Sunday's meeting is Wasps' last of the season, British speedway continues until October 31.
During the month, Hayley Stadium will host a couple of Conference League meetings, involving Newport Mavericks and the British Side-Car Championship.
