NEWPORT had victory snatched from them last night by 19 points to 17, as they took on Llanelli in their last game of the Women's Super Cup at Rodney Parade.
Newport had the advantage in the first half. In the tenth minute following excellent lineout work Hayley Baxter raced through the Llanelli defence to score their first try. Llanelli attacked and when scrum half Ronnie Owens, delivered clean ball to Awen Thomas the break came and centre Lowri Jones scored in the corner.
Five minutes before half time a quickly taken penalty by Kerry Jenkins caught Llanelli unaware and following a good passing move fly Half, Rhian Wilmott, scored between the posts for Naomi Thomas to convert.
The second half saw Llanelli taking more control. After 15 minutes captain Helen Edwards won a lineout and, supported by the forwards, was driven into Newports 22 where Non Evans again showed her pace and although brought down managed to score. Thomas converted.
With ten minutes remaining, Rhian Wilmott, just recovered from injury, scored her second try of the game following good work from the Newport backs. In the last few minutes Llanelli scrum half Ronnie Owens was substituted for Cath Walkley, who made an impression immediately.
From a scrum she passed to Non Evans who flew down the pitch and found support from Walkley, who scored between the posts. Though the pressure was on Thomas converted.
