NEWPORT pair John Dinsdale and Gareth Isaac (pictured) will help to make history next week when they take the field for Wales in the first four-cornered seniors international series at Portmarnock in Ireland.

Newport club secretary Dinsdale and former Welsh seniors champion Isaac are part of a seven-man team that goes into action on October 2 against England, Ireland and Sweden.

For this first series Scotland have decided to stay on the sidelines, but they could enter the fray in the future.

Both Dinsdale and Isaac performed well in the Welsh Seniors Championship at Aberdovey in June and will be key members of the strong seven-man line-up, which includes twice Welsh amateur champion John Roger Jones.

John Jermine who, aged 56, became the oldest Welsh amateur champion at Harlech last year and was named in the side, has pulled out.

Jermine has been dogged by an arm injury for most of the year after an accident while on holiday.

The Welsh Golfing Union will name a replacement for Jermine later in the week. The series runs from Tuesday to Thursday and the non-playing captain of the Welsh side is the highly experienced David McLean.

Welsh side: B Cramb (Tenby); J Dinsdale (Newport); J Gottwaltz (Haverfordwest); G Isaac (Newport); J R Jones (Llandudno); W Stow (Aberdovey). l St Pierre couple Ann Taylor and Maureen Moody will fly the Gwent flag in the Australian Spoons final - the concluding Welsh Ladies Golf Union event of the season - at Borth and Ynyslas on Saturday.

Taylor, a 17-handicapper, and Moody, who plays off a mark of 31, qualified for the final in a regional event and fancy their chances in this handicap contest.

Back markers with a combined handicap of 17 are Wrexham pair Wendy Roberts and Jo Nicholson while other fancied duos include the Royal Porthcawl combination of Jane David and Susan Anthony.

Vince Collins retained his club championship title at the Pontypool Golf Club finals day. He beat Dave Jones seven and five in their 36-hole final after being two up after 18. Roly Hanson beat Steve Ford two and one in the Fowler Cup.

Ray Rappell beat Jim Peploe on the 18th in the Davies Medal. Derek Jones beat Steve Wills two and one in the William Phillips Cup. Ireen Downing and Nic Scorrer beat Margaret and Colin Williams three and two in the Pegler Cup.
