A NEW chapter has begun in the history of UK Steel Enterprise as the organisation continues its role of encouraging enterprise to take root and flourish in Newport and the Gwent valleys.

UKSE has added an important new dimension to its services with the opening of a new office in Newport to deal exclusively with the specific requirements of business in the area.

The new operation is headed by Gwent-born Mark Hislop, who brings years of experience of commercial lending from his previous career in corporate finance with one of the High Street banks.

Mr Hislop, who has moved back to Wales from Kent to take up the assignment, said: "We have worked with many of the top companies in Gwent over the years and have a great deal of experience as a result.

"As an organisation we have a feel for the requirements of entrepreneurs in the area, and are well suited to work with them."

UKSE offers loan and equity packages to companies of between £25,000 and £150,000, either start-ups or expansions, on flexible terms.

Once the initial investment is made, UKSE takes a keen interest in the fortunes of the company through its the client mentoring service.

Experienced business advisers keep in regular contact, and offer ongoing support to help the company fulfil its business plan.

Mr Hislop said: "The mentoring service has been of great value to clients over the years, particularly to start-ups who can benefit from the experience of the advisers. This close relationship means that UKSE is always up to date with the position of their client, so further investments which may be needed to aid a timely expansion can be made with the minimum of red tape.

"This is particularly helpful when a client company sees a business opportunity and needs extra funds to take advantage of it before the chance slips away."
