CWMBRAN light middle-weight Gary Lockett (pictured) continued his march towards title contention with a first round demolition job on Guyana's Denny Dalton in Liverpool last night.

It was his 14th straight win as a pro, eleven of them by stoppage, and the tenth time for him to finish matters within two rounds. Yet his celebrations afterwards were muted. "I'm pleased, but I'm not getting any experience," said Lockett.

"Its a hard thing when you knock someone out in a round and everyone's congratulating you and you don't know whether you're happy or not. "I need to get some rounds under my belt and I need to fight people who can last a while with me."

Dalton came out aggressively at the start, but Lockett covered up well, biding his time until the storm blew out.

A right-left combination spun the West Indian's head sideways and Lockett pounced, powering in shots as Dalton slumped against the ropes, prompting referee Chris Kelly's intervention with 38 seconds left of the round.

"You could tell the quality of your opponent within the first 30 seconds," said Lockett. "I knew by then that when I caught him he'd go.

"Now I want to step up to an eight-rounder, but I need them to find someone who can stay around that long."

The way Lockett punches, that may not be easy.
