PUPILS at a small Monmouth school are sweeping the board in national chess championships.
Five pupils of the Grange School have won all the Welsh titles between the under-9 to under-12 levels and have now been included in the Welsh junior squad.
The youngsters have represented their country in the European Youth championships in Greece and are due to go to the World Junior Chess championships in Spain in October. The pupils at the Grange - Monmouth School's prep department - have coaching sessions twice a week after school from their tutor Kevin Thomas.
He said: "It's a delight to work with these boys - they are committed and enthusiastic". In the last few months, Matthew Kinloch became the joint under-10 and the under-9 champion at the West of England championships. Jac Thomas became the Welsh under-9 champion and his brother, Joseff, the Welsh under-11 champion.
On the strength of the Grange's success, the Welsh selectors have asked Mr Thomas to become the Wales under-12 manager for the coming season.
