WALES coach Graham Henry (pictured) has NOT told the Welsh Rugby Union he is quitting his post when his contract with Wales ends after the 2003 World Cup.
And neither is Henry on any shortlist for the post of New Zealand coach. Current coach Wayne Smith and assistant Tony Gilbert have been told to re-apply for their positions after the All Blacks failed to land the Tri Nations trophy.
But Henry's name has not made the New Zealand shortlist and an official today said Henry would not qualify for the job unless he returns home and coaches again at provincial level for a year.
The WRU have poured scorn on the suggestion Henry has told them he is quitting. "There have been no formal discussions between Graham and the Union about post 2003," said a WRU spokesman today.
He also revealed Henry's current contract ends BEFORE the next World Cup. His term comes to an end in July 2003 and the World Cup is in the autumn of that year. It is inconceivable Henry would go before the tournament, having built up to it, but nevertheless there will have to be some extension, albeit for a few months.
Another New Zealander, Steve Hansen of Canterbury Crusaders, arrives in Wales at the end of November to take up the post of forwards coach. Already there is talk of him being groomed to take over from Henry, but that is also entirely premature.
