CWMCARN Paragon's double British Mountain Bike Champion Simon Jenkins finally captured the title he has been chasing when he won the Welsh Masters Championship at Builth Wells.

With silver and bronze medals to his credit in the event, Jenkins approached the race with confidence afterhis most successful season off and on-road.

On a new course of five miles covered four times Jenkins, beaten by just five seconds by former Cwmcarn rider Andrew Gwatkin last year, made his intentions clear from the start, attacking from the gun and taking Gwatkin with him.

The two soon moved clear of the field, becoming locked in a fierce battle. On the final lap, Jenkins attacked to open a gap on his rival.

With half a mile to go, Gwatkin dug deep to fight his way back to contest a sprint finish. As the line approached, Jenkins made one last massive effort which took him clear to take the championship by two yards.

To make it an excellent day for Cwmcarn, Ross Porter rode to the bronze medal position. Darren Carpenter's fine season was justly rewarded when he won the third/fourth category in the Welsh Criterium Championship.

In the first category, Chris Sheppard rode to seventh overall and Stuart McDonald eighth. Rising star Richard Wilkins won the junior title.

In the inaugural BCF/RTTC British Circuit Time Trial Championship at Leicestershire, over a rolling 30 mile course, Welsh international Paul Sheppard recorded 1hr 9min 51sec for a fine 12th place overall against the best riders against the watch in the country.

Former Cwmcarn rider Anthony Malarczyk was one place behind in 1hr 10min 6sec. Stuart McDonald clocked 1hr 13min 19sec.

Another former Cwmcarn rider, Julian Winn (GS Pinarello) rode to a brilliant fourth pace with 1hr 8min 32sec. Victory went to Stuart Dangerfield (Camel Valley) with 1hr 5min 46sec.
