CWMBRAN visited Llanhilleth for a Fourth Division East game and were 21-5 winners. Cwmbran started well putting pressure on the heavy Llan pack and within ten minutes scrum half Mark Doughty went over for an opportunist try which was converted by outside half Stuart Rosser.
But Cwmbran relaxed too much and allowed Llan to put a lot of pressure on Cwmbran and score a try from a charged down kick.
For the rest of the second half Llan were on top but there were pluses for Cwmbran with flankers Paul Webb and number eight Gary Coombes and Keith Hobbs tackling everything and props Martin Good and John Hopkins more than holding their own against a much heavier front row.
They managed to see the first half out without further scores. The second half saw Doughty go over for his second try which was converted by Rosser. Cwmbran were now playing some entertaining rugby and were getting the lineouts from Stuart Blake and John Ford.
Centres Robert Freebury and captain Mike Vann were attacking the Llan backs at will. A beautiful movement between the backs resulted in wing Gareth Groves going over between the posts for a try which Rosser converted to finish off the score. Next Saturday Cwmbran are away to Hendy in the Principality Cup.
Cwmbran Athletic continued their winning ways with a 10-5 win against St Julians High School Old Boys and the very young Youth side lost to Bridgend Athletic after a much better performance than previous weeks.
