DESPITE the impressive score-line Pontypool produced an unconvincing win against the Wanderers.

With the events in America still fresh in the mind, both players and fans observed a minutes silence before kick-off, but Pontypool's forwards also had a quiet start to the match.

Looking tired, disorganised and jaded with the ball throughout the match, the Pontypool eight frustrated their back line with the quality of possession they received.

But on the rare occasions when Ponty cut loose in the first half they looked dangerous and it was the red and blacks that scored first with a well worked try.

Quick ball from a line out in Glamorgan's 22 released Jonathan Hawker who was tackled inches from the try line. Pooler's forwards were first to the break and scrum half Nicky Lloyd fed Byron Hayward who cruised over for his second try of the season.

The outside half went onto miss the conversion for an early 5-0 lead.

Wanderers' fought back with a regular flow of possession from their forwards and scrum half Garan Treherne spotted a gap in the home defence to dart through before winger Owain Thomas scored a well worked try, full back Jason Pocock converted for a 7-5 lead, but missed with a number of penalty chances.

Glamorgan continued to pile on the pressure as it started to rain and Pooler struggled against Glamorgan's defence.

Their lineout was also in disarray as half time drew closer. But to the delight of the home fans, a simple kick from the hand to touch by Glamorgan's Rob Biggs on his own try line was fumbled by the outside half and the towering flanker Cae Trayhern came crashing over to touch the loose ball down for a 12-7 lead.

A penalty from Hayward just minutes later extended the score to 15-7 at half time. Ponty made three substitutions and an early penalty kick from Hayward stretched the lead to 18-7. But Glamorgan closed the score line with a penalty of their own to make it 18-10.

Hayward looked to rally his side and deep in the Wanderers half a lightening break and try by Nicky Lloyd was converted by Hayward, along with a penalty, to make the score a comfortable 28-10.

Glamorgan continued to attack and Adian Evans scooped a grubber kick to score a well deserved try, before Tongan power house Manu Tuipuloto scored for Pontypool.

To the cheers of the crowd the giant forward bulldozed his way through tackle after tackle to touch down over the line for the final converted try of the game.

This was a match Pontypool could have easily lost and they will need to work on a number of areas if they are to win promotion, but once again former Gloucester and Wales fly-half Byron Hayward was outstanding.
