NEIL Oakley has become the second successive Gwent golfer to win the Bass Brewers Welsh Champion of Champions Tournament over the Cradoc Course at Brecon.
The County player from St Mellons follows in the footsteps of Llanwern's Jonathan Davidson, who captured the honours a year ago.
Rounds of 71 and 72 for a total of 143 gave Oakley a clear cut three strokes success over Haverfordwest's Richard Scott and Leon Clark, a member of the Pontnewydd side which won the Welsh team championship last month.
Clark was joint leader after the first round having returned a 69, the same score as Gareth James of Clays Farm, Wrexham. But Clark later fell away with a disappointing 77. On his way to victory Oakley had a hole in one at the third to pick up an award for being the nearest to the pin on that hole.
Former Gwent County champion Gareth Hughes from the Newport club finished in joint 13th place with 152 which comprised rounds of 75 and 72 while Nick Collier of Alice Springs was seven places and two strokes better than Hughes.
Final leading scores: 143 N Oakley (St Mellons) 71, 72; 146 R Scott (Haverfordwest) 75, 71; L Clark (Pontnewydd) 69, 77; 148 L Griffiths (Coed-y-Mwstwr) 74, 74; J V Williams (Prestatyn) 70, 78; 150 N Collier (Alice Springs) 75, 75; B O'Neil (Whitehall) 73, 77; R Butler (Borth and Ynyslas) 70, 80; G James (Clay Farm) 69, 81; 151 R Evans (Langland Bay) 76, 75; A Blackwell (Bull Bay) 79, 72; M Serpell (Radyr) 76, 75; 152 T Iverson (Builth Wells) 79, 73; 152 P Richards (Aberystwyth) 78, 74; G Hughes (Newport) 75, 77.
