The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Dolman Theatre, September 10-15.
TO begin Newport Playgoers' new season, they bring you this evergreen.
Billed as a trivial comedy, this work was the last and most important of his plays.
The first night performance opened at the St Jame's Theatre, London, on February 14, 1895, and was received with rapturous delight by both audience and critics.
All who have an interest in theatre when viewing this play wait always with delight for the "punchline" of the play.... "A handbag!"
Though over a century old, it can still delight us with its humour and niceties.
That Oscar Wilde could write such a comedy in the midst of all his personal troubles is a salute to his genius.
Performances start at 7.15pm except Friday when curtain-up is at 7.30pm.
Tickets are available from the Visitors' Centre, Newport Library, or from the box office Dolman Theatre on the night.
