Newport Phoenix Cycling Club youth riders faced a tough challenge in round five of the 2001 Welsh Mountain Bike Series against some of the finest mountain bike riders in the UK.

Paul Champkin, pictured, finished fourth at Margam Park. Ben Simmons was sixth behind winner Adam Thomas.

In the Maindy Track League Gareth Davies won the boys' under-16s category and Kimberly Unsworth the girls' under-16s.

In the British Circuit Championships at Eastway Kimberly Unsworth was fourth in the girls' under-16 event.

Charlotte Davies finished second in the under-12 girls' race while in the under-10s girls' event Rebecca Jefferies was first and Louise Unsworth second.

In the Welsh Rally Challenge finals, David Unsworth was fifth. In years three, four and five girls (7-11) Charlotte Davies was first amd wona bike for her efforts. Louise Unsworth was third .

Gareth Davies was first in 24min 25sec in the Welsh under-16s ten-mile time trial under-16 event and Louise Unsworth first in the girls' under-16 event in 29min 58sec.

Andy Butcher (22min 30sec) and Jeff Unsworth (26min 42sec) raced in the open ten-mile time trial.

In the open 25-mile time trials Newport Phoenix's Andy Butcher recorded 54min 20sec.
