APATHETIC traders are threatening the future of a popular Gwent carnival, a furious organiser claims.

Abergavenny Carnival was revived in 1999 after organisers resurrected the popular event following a six-year absence.

But now organisers of the community-driven showpiece are seeking talks with local traders they accuse of turning their back on the summer extravaganza.

They claim that businesses in and around the town are refusing to help promote the showpiece with some this year even failing to display a carnival poster in their shops.

It is feared that unless support is forthcoming, next year's carnival will be shelved.

John Bannon of Abergavenny Chamber of Trade hit back, saying traders tried to help "as much as we possibly can."

Carnival committee chairman, Chris Evans told the Argus: "We are fed up with getting no support from the local traders, and unless we get it you can say goodbye to the carnival."

He added: "We get good support from local people entering floats and walking entries, and we'd like to thank them and our sponsors.

"But we are fed up with the reaction of shopkeepers who can't be bothered to put up our A4 posters advertising the carnival - a local event for local people."

Mr Bannon, who owns Jaybee Soft Furnishings in the town, said: "We do try and help as much as we can.

"Small local traders do their bit to support local causes and are asked to donate prizes for raffles etc. every day of the week."

He said Mr Evans should be "congratulated" for reviving the carnival and he personally would display a poster if requested.

Abergavenny Carnival committee will meet on September 11 at Abergavenny Community House when a final decision whether to scrap next year's event will be made.
