THREE cygnets and an adult male swan were found shot to death on a Newport reen.
A local farmer who found them contacted members of a local group who are dedicated to protecting the birds.
Now Swan Rescue South Wales is hoping Argus readers will help the voluntary organisation to offer a reward for information leading to the conviction of the culprits.
All four birds were killed on a reen on the levels at St Bridges, Wentloog.
"They had been shot, in some cases several times, through the neck and head," said a spokesman for Swan Rescue, adding that the weapon used was an air gun.
Swans are territorial and extremely loyal. All four birds were from the same family and the adult female was found a quarter of a mile from the bodies.
"She was very defensive. We also think the horses nearby must have been frightened because normally they are quite tame but they were very skittish and wary of us."
Swan Rescue says there have been a number of incidents involving swans on the levels.
Swan Rescue, which relies on donations, wants to offer a reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible. Anyone who can help is asked to ring 07802 472788.
