HEROIC postal worker Mike Parfitt (pictured) could be in line for an award from his employers for saving a girl from a house fire.
The Argus exclusively revealed on Tuesday how Parcelforce worker Mr Parfitt was on a delivery round when he saw the fire in a house in Eton Road, Maindee, Newport, on Monday.
He grabbed a ladder and smashed a bedroom window with a hammer to rescue 15-year-old Heather Perrott-Douglas.
Heather had escaped but became trapped when she went back into the house for her mother, Carole, who was asleep.
Father-of-two Mr Parfitt, of Markham Crescent, Oakdale, broke Heather's fall as she jumped from the building.
Now his bosses are considering nominating him for a bravery award.
A spokeswoman for Parcelforce Worldwide said: "It is certainly something we would like to do. We think Mr Parfitt is a real hero and we think what he did was extremely brave. We are extremely proud of him and he could well be nominated for an award for his bravery." Mr Parfitt, 36, was modest about his actions when he spoke to the Argus on Tuesday. "I just think I did what anyone else would have done," he said.
"If it were one of my family in that situation, then I would hope someone would have done the same."
Mr Parfitt was treated for minor cuts to the head at hospital, but was back in work the next day.
Yesterday the Argus reported how Heather had praised Mr Parfitt's actions. Speaking from her hospital bed where was recovering from a collapsed lung following smoke inhalation, she said she thought he should get an award.
