A NEWPORT pub has closed for 'public health' reasons after environmental health officers in Pill discovered contaminated water in its cellars.

Council chiefs have been quick to say that the move is not linked to the ongoing investigation into Newport's typhoid outbreak.

The Cambrian Hotel, (pictured) on Commercial Road, Pill, closed its doors on Tuesday evening on the advice of environmental health officers.

A council spokeswoman today told the Argus that the pub's proprietor had closed it voluntarily, but stressed that the decision was not linked to the investigation into the typhoid which left four youngsters from the area needing hospital treatment.

Officers from Newport council say they discovered 'contaminated water' in the cellars of The Cambrian which they said 'posed a risk' to public health.

The Cambrian Hotel is just a few doors down from Sam's Kebab House, which has remained closed for two weeks while officials probe the source of the outbreak.

The Argus exclusively revealed last week how a number of premises on Commercial Road, which included Sam's Kebab House, had been flooded during last month's storms.

A council spokeswoman said: "The proprietor has voluntarily agreed to close the premises temporarily following an inspection by environmental health officers.

"The basement of the hotel was flooded recently and officers were concerned that residue flood water could contaminate goods and equipment stored in the cellar. "It is understood that alternative cellar arrangements are being made and replacement equipment provided which will enable the premises to re-open."

No one was available for comment at the pub.

The probe into the source of the typhoid outbreak continues as four young people recover from the disease.
