IT was another disappointing night for Newport Wasps fans as their side fell to an away defeat at the hands of the Islanders.
With Carl Wilkinson guesting for long-term injury Ryan Tolley, Wasps found themselves 14 points down at the halfway stage after heat eight and at 31-17 adrift they were powerless to prevent the home side running rampart in the later stages of the race.
Wasps did manage a 5-1 win in heat number 11 as Chris Neath was shepherded all the way home by Anders Henrikkson despite the attentions of Islander Adam Shields who still managed to finish third despite falling on the last bend.
With Danny Bird just being denied a maximum scoring 18 points after being beaten by Henriksson, the home side were never really threatened as Wasps bottom order riders struggled to score.
Newport's Australian manager Neil Street chose not to make any tactical changes during the race and used the riders in their set order to give them valuable experience of racing on the home side's large track.
But Newport fans can now look forward to a bumper feast of speedway this Bank Holiday weekend, as the Wasps look to put their midweek disappointment behind them.
Wasps stage the Great Britain v Germany under-16s fixture on Friday night with some of the sport's most promising youngsters on show.
Then the Wasps face Stoke in a Premier League clash on Sunday (2.30pm) at Hayley Stadium with Reading's Phil Morris provisionally booked as a guest for Glenn Cunningham who is on long track duty.
Then on Bank Holiday Monday the Wasps ride against Swindon in a re-arranged derby clash (4pm).
