SOUTH Wales Police have sent shock-waves through Welsh rugby by withdrawing from this season's Welsh League.
The Bridgend-based club, one of Wales' most famous club sides, have been forced to pull out of Division Three East after failing to attract players.
South Wales Police are five-times Welsh Cup quarter-finalists and a Premier Division side alongside Swansea, Cardiff and Llanelli, nine years ago.
Police chairman Terry Morris insisted the club has not folded and is still in operation but has failed to attract players. He also said the club is not in financial difficulty.
Meanwhile, four clubs begin their Celtic League campaign tonight. Welsh/Scottish league champions Swansea travel to Ulster while revived Bridgend host Pontypridd in Pool A.
At the Brewery Field, Bridgend, who have claimed a Heineken Cup spot under the guidance of coach Dennis John, will welcome Pontypridd.
Bridgend have signed eight players in pre-season including Welsh international full-back Nathan Budgett from Ebbw Vale, Welsh centre Dafydd James from Llanelli and Gareth Thomas from Cardiff.
Ponty's biggest loss is the departure of points-machine Lee Jarvis to Neath.
