THE League of Wales season begins in earnest tomorrow and Cwmbran Town will be looking to get their season off to a winning start against Newtown.
There have been several high profile changes to the squad in the close season, with Sean Wharton returning to the club and Dean Philpott coming in to bolster the defence. The Crows will have to play all their home games at Port Talbot as Cwmbran Stadium is still undergoing repairs, but midfielder Nathan Wigg is convinced that this could be the club's year.
"The benefit of playing at Port Talbot is that the pitch is similar to the one at Cwmbran Stadium," said Wigg.
"It will suit our passing game. We've spoken about it as a group and having played their toward the end of last season it won't be a problem for the side not playing at home." The success of Wigg's partnership with new signing Wharton will be essential to how the club perform over the season and the former skipper is confident he and Wharton will click.
"Sean has got a lot of League of Wales experience and that will prove to be invaluable," said the Town midfielder.
"But if we can form a good partnership and become the rock of the side then I think Cwmbran can go one better this season.
"I think it will also allow the midfield to push forward a bit more, Sean and I are essentially holding players and if we get that right then either of us can get forward to support the front two. It'll give us an extra option."
Town kick-off their season against last year's fourth placed side Newtown and having piped the Mid-Wales club to one of the much sort after European places they are bound to be out for revenge.
Cwmbran though are determined to make a winning start to the season and get into the kind of Rhythm that saw them win eight consecutive games in last year's title run-in. "The game against Newtown will be tough," said Wigg.
"But we've strengthened the squad and are determined to go one better this year, we want to make a good start which will stand us in good stead for the rest of the year. "The morale in the camp is good and we know we can beat any side in the league."
