YVONNE Malcolm (pictured) says she is still the proudest mum in the world despite sprint star son Christian just missing out on a medal in the World Championships 200-metre final.
Joined by a full house of family and friends at her home in Rosslyn Road, Newport, Mrs Malcolm smashed pan lids together as she cheered on the former Hartridge High pupil.
And she promised a very special welcome home for Christian, who has emphasised his world class at the championships in Edmonton, Canada.
In the final he came fifth, beaten to bronze by a whisker.
"I am the proudest mum in Gwent, in Wales, in the world," said Mrs Malcolm. "I stayed up all night and did not bother going to bed so I could watch Christian.
"You cannot describe what this meant to my son and his coach Jock Anderson. He has been absolutely brilliant and knew that all of Britain was cheering him on."
She said she has supported Christian from the start and followed him across the country.
"I will definitely treat him to a nice meal - maybe his favourite chicken and rice. I think he's deserved it. He looks so tired and it will be brilliant to have him back home.
"He has worked so hard for it. He's competed in the final of both the 100 and 200 metres at just 22 years old which is just great. We are all proud as punch."
Mrs Malcolm thanked the huge number of people who had sent in messages of support.
"Everyone's been brilliant," she said. And she said her son remained "the laid-back boy from Newport".
