WHEN Elvis Presley sang he was "In the Chapel", he may well have pictured the wedding of Newport couple Lilian and Lyndon Ward.

Because when the music fans decided to tie the knot, they decided to devote the ceremony to their passion for rock 'n' roll.

The themed wedding at Tredegar House on Saturday was a classic throwback to the 1950s, with male guests dressed up in teddy boy outfits, and the music of Buddy Holly and Little Richard playing throughout the day.

Bride Lilian, aged 50, a ward hostess at the Royal Gwent, arrived in true rock 'n' roll style, in a classic 1958 Chevrolet, and walked to meet her groom to the sounds of Shania Twain's From This Moment On.

And after the formalities were over, it was back to the reception at St Patrick's Club, on Cromwell Road, for a good old rock around the clock.

Bridegroom Lyndon, who works for a catering contractors in Newport, said: "It was a great day. Everyone had a wonderful time, the outfits were out of this world."

The couple met at the monthly rock 'n' roll club, Route 66, in Caldicot. And the music was not the only Twist on the big day.

After being introduced by mutual friends, they discovered that they had actually been childhood neighbours, living next door to each other in Broadwood Close, in Ringland. Lyndon said: "We loved rock 'n' roll, the music and dressing up, everything about it. "And it was hard to believe that we knew each other when we were children. We were introduced by mutual friends, but as soon as I saw Lilian I recognised her face.

"It must have been fate that we were to come together sooner or later." The couple flew out to Canada this morning for their two-week honeymoon, which will include a trip to New York.

But there will not be time for a pilgrimage to Gracelands. Lyndon, 46, said: "We would have loved to go down to see where rock 'n' roll started off, but we did not have the time."
